It's official! We are over the hill (in podcast episode numbers, that is). But it's meagre milestone when we realize we're going for 400 easily.

In this episode we talk about what it's like editing a feature with Davinci Resolve, once thought to only be a colour grading application. Until BlackMagic released version 12 with some NLE capabilities. It's not exactly the easiest transition in the world to change over to Resolve though...

Video Copilot came bursting into the party with a new plug-in (FOR FREE!). The Saber Plug-In for After Effects helps you create lightsabers, glow fade-off, lasers and other glowy, sci-fi stuff (http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2016/03/new-plug-in-saber-now-available-100-free/).

PLUS, we have a contest! And you can win a pretty sweet prize. Our good pals over at Post Notes have released a plug-in that brings your to-do list of revisions and notes from the director directly into a Premiere panel. No more switching back and forth between Premiere and your email thread with the director or Preview with a pdf of changes to make (http://postnotes.io/).

So here's how you can win a copy of Post Notes for yourself: leave an iTunes review for the podcast...yeah, yeah, it's a shameful "Hungry for iTunes Reviews Contest" play, but whatever we're going with it and you get a copy of a handy plugin.

  • Step 1: Write us an iTunes review. Honestly, it can be anything. But whatever you write, we will read on our next episode. You need to submit it before March 26th 11:59PM to qualify.
  • Step 2: E-mail us at CommandEditPodcast@Gmail.com and let us know what your iTunes username is and which review is yours. Y'know, so we can reward you.
  • Step 3: Wait. That's it. We will randomly pick a winner from all reviewers.

In this episode we're dealing with REJECTION.

Rejection is inevitable, whether it be in sales, in creative decision-making, or any other part of the business.

Failure is a part of the game. Rejection is universal.

How does rejection reflect on you? What is the best way to react to a rejection? How do you deal with a "No"?

Josh and Nick go into some tips on how to react to rejection and how it can actually benefit you in the long run.

In this episode we list off 3 key questions that you as an editor can ask early on to help yourself BIG TIME later down the road.

A lot of headaches can be avoided simply by asking the right question before you start working. We have 3 questions for the corporate/commercial editor and 3 for the narrative/feature film editor. So really you're getting double the value here.

Nick experienced some frustration dealing with Davinci Resolve 12 last week while assistant editing a feature. The director wants to cut the film right in Resolve for ease of workflow, but it's not as easy as it seems. He's going to share this process in this week's blog post. For now, here are some links to get you started with treating Resolve as an NLE.

http://www.redsharknews.com/post/item/2779-blackmagic-resolve-12-review-what-s-it-like-as-an-editor
http://www.4kshooters.net/2016/02/14/blackmagic-davinci-resolve-update-12-3-released/

And this Tuesday a new plugin will be revealed for Premiere. It's called Post Notes and boasts that it can bring your notes and to-do lists straight into Premiere instead of having to have them open elsewhere and switch between programs constantly. Will it work as well as we're hoping?

Do you attend conferences on your own time or your company's time? Do you feel like you are benefitting a lot from the ones you go to?

A little later than usual this week (because Nick traded his editing-at-desk job for a week to work on set of a horror feature) this episode is about all of those post-production conferences that are held throughout the year.

NAB, SXSW, SIGGRAPH and IBC are among the bigger ones you've likely heard of but there are many, many others that you could be attending. If you're antisocial or not a networking person you may not attend many right now, but you should because they can help you out in a lot of ways: expand your network of other post professionals, pick up new skills to boost your editing game, stay on top of new announcements and emerging technology and cement your position (both online and offline) as an expert in your field.

We list off some conferences that are worth attending, how to create a "plan of attack" to get the most of your time spent there, create a hitlist of people you want to meet, and other ways you can increase the returned value of getting out to more cons.

Are you on the right path for your career?

We all want to end up with success eventually but have you ever considered if you're taking the right steps to achieve it for yourself? The questions we ask in this episode are some of the toughest ones that anyone dares to think of and give serious thought to.

POST NEWS:

Adobe released an update for Creative Cloud that gave a few users a scare when it ended up trashing some important folders without warning. You may want to hold off on that update. (Link)

Avid released an update for Media Composer 8.5 that doesn't trash your important files. So that's something. (Link)

And by the way, does anyone happen to know what Deadpool was cut on? *sarcasm font* Everyone's talking about how the latest Marvel movie broke new ground by proving that R-rated movies can bust the box office, but we're more interested in the fact that Premiere was the director's only choice when it came to choosing an NLE. Premiere Bro has a page dedicated to almost every link, post and tweet about it. Check it out. (Link)

If there's one thing editors are guilty of it's loving too much

This week in an attempt at a Valentine's-themed episode we invited David on the show. Who is David? He is the husband-to-be of a TV editor and friend of mine who agreed to awkwardly talk to us about what it's like to basically be married to someone who works the crazy hours we do and speaks in hard-to-understand lingo at the end of the work day.

This week we chime in on the 2016 Oscar nominated titles for Best Editing and their respective editors. We apparently didn't watch many movies last year so we'd like to know from you which you think will win it. Tweet us @CommandEdit with your guess.

In this episode we talk about how to successfully "ping" your clients to keep them in touch and make them remember you when they need work done.

Also, how do you build a quote for your time and price when going after a job? We offer some tips on setting your quote up to get a "Yes" and not shoot yourself in the foot.

As well we highlight a just-released add-on from ScreenLight for Adobe Premiere that allows you to import client feedback directly into your project timeline as markers. This will save you some valuable time while getting those revisions done.

This episode we're chatting with the Premiere Bro (aka Sean Schools) who runs the similarly titled site www.premierebro.com which serves as a valuable resource for those Adobe editors out there.

Sean earned the nickname by being the go-to Adobe know-it-all among his colleagues and started the site in 2014. He has since fostered it into a site where editors can find hot tips on using Premiere better in ways they didn't realize, as well as keeping a finger on the pulse of the latest in Adobe news.

He currently works in New Jersey for the ad agency JK Design and in his very limited off-time gets asked to attend this year's Editor's Retreat. I don't know about you, but I would love to achieve a level of success where I get asked to go places. And not the "Sir, would you please leave?" type of request that I usually get.

We talked about how he got hooked on Premiere, how he earned the moniker "Premiere Bro", how he balances work plus life (with a family) PLUS maintaining his online presence as an Adobe expert, as well as some other kind of invasive questions.

Plus listen to Josh get irked that he's outnumbered 2-1 by Adobe users...while I was outnumbered 2-1 by Americans. It all works out.

Storytime!

We had a guest fall ill this week so rather than force them to record with us, we decided to share a few rough experiences we've had with past edit projects.

There are lessons to be learned from every job, especially the ones that present challenges and don't go as well as you'd like.

Note: We are not necessarily talking just about "clients from hell" and venting our frustrations. These are some of our most difficult projects that we've been involved in that we've taken away some prized knowledge to aid us in the future.

So gather 'round the fire and listen to our tales!

We brought in an expert this week to discuss how you can build a powerfully effective YouTube channel.

Shane Luis is the creator of ReRez, a YouTube channel that features the newest, strangest and most unique gaming topics. He offers reviews of unheard-of games and consoles, as well as a series called "Positives" where he finds the silver lining to terrible games.

Today he's built the channel up to over 65,000 subscribers with almost 200 videos uploaded, his most popular earning over 1 million views.

In this episode we talk about how he found an audience, how he found the right content to put out, and some tips for others who are looking to build a channel for themselves.

In this episode we offer up many ways you can go back to school with your editing skills.

There are countless ways to up your game: webinars, subscription services, courses or online schools.

Which is the right one for you?

We break them all down for you here. However it is you'd prefer to learn more about the wizardry mysticism that is post-production, there's a way for you to do that from one of these suggestions.

Some are paid. Some are delightfully free.

In this episode we follow up our previous topic from Episode 28 about goal setting for success.

As Homer Simpson once said, "Trying is the first step toward failure." And in a way...he's absolutely right!

You're bound to fail. Everybody does! Nobody succeeds on the first try. And if you do, you are a superhuman and we should be worshipping you accordingly. But it's more likely that you are only human like the rest of us.

When we fail, we tend to let it affect our motivation and sometimes throw in the towel right then and there. But you've set your goals for a reason: they are things you truly WANT to achieve. So don't let a little thing like FAILURE stand in your way.

We discuss 4 steps (or 5, depending on whether you listen to Josh or Nick the most) you can immediately take upon failure that will get you back on the proverbial horse. A sort of...resetting if you will. Pressing "continue" on that Game Over screen.

"The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals."

Around this time of year you start thinking of your New Year's resolutions. Actually...let's be honest...you're most likely thinking about how bogus New Year's resolutions are.

They are there for people to set, attempt for the month of January and then completely abandon without guilt. When's the last time you a heard from a friend of yours who actually saw one of their resolution through to the end of the year?

But setting goals for yourself is a very important part of learning and improvement. And there are ways you can establish your goals so that you are more likely to succeed at them.

In this episode we talk about a few ways that you can set yourself up for success with your own goals for the next year. They are simple but very essential to getting yourself to the next level.

Also as we end this year, we can't thank our listeners enough! (That would be you).

This podcast started as a shared goal between Josh and myself, as we mention in the episode, and along the way has turned its focus to the goals of the listeners.

What do you want to learn about post-production that will help you in your career?

What other ways are you looking to improve your physical and mental health?

What else would help give you that boost that you need to become more confident with yourself?

We have a lot planned for the Command+Edit Podcast for 2016. Listen to the episode to find out what our goals are and how we plan to achieve them.

Happy New Year, fellow editors!

*NOTE: THIS IS A SPOILER-FREE ZONE*

There's some kind of sci-fi movie coming out this week that's got everybody's attention. So we figured we should probably do something about Star Wars ourselves.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens launches this week, the long-awaited sequel to one of the biggest movie franchises of all time. And also one of the biggest underdog filmmaker stories ever.

The one that started it all, Star Wars: A New Hope, was an instant classic that solidified itself in cinema history. It's no surprise then that there are endless great stories about the production that continue to be told today.

Three of those wonderfully creative people were the original Star Wars editors: Paul Hirsch, Richard Chew and Marcia Lucas (does that last name sound familiar?). Yes, Marcia was also George Lucas' wife at the time of production. That Director-Editor relationship sounds eerily similar to another popular movie we discussed recently.

This is a fun, quick episode for you to digest where we discuss our first experiences with the Star Wars films growing up, our predictions for what Episode VII has in store (will Han Solo die??) as well as some fun facts about the original editors that you probably didn't know.

Let's face it, you probably didn't even know their names, right? But they've definitely been working on some movies very recently that you've seen. Find out which ones.

And may the force be with you!

In this episode we answer a few questions sent to us by our listeners and share one editor's story of his first big gig. We love hearing those kinds of stories so if you'd like to share yours, please send them in and we would love to read them.

We've all seen those horrific requests posted on forums like Craigslist or Mandy.com that ask for editors with ridiculous terms attached (usually incredibly low payment or nothing at all for editing long-form projects...but you get exposure!). Check out this one in particular though and see if you can spot what's wrong with it.

A video making the rounds with the hashtag #SayNoToSpec got us talking for this episode. The idea of spec work may have made sense in video production at some point...but it's now 2015 and it's long since lost it's flavour. We are way past sick of hearing potential clients approaching editors with the usual lines:

  • "It'll be great exposure for you!"
  • "Give us a discount on this one and we'll give you more work later!"
  • ...and yadda yadda yadda. You know the lines.

An ad agency in Toronto, Zulu Alpha Kilo, produced a video that seems to capture honest reactions of other trade professionals being asked to do spec work (spoiler alert: they say no).

Spec work became a laughable concept among video production pros a decade ago. So why are some people still saying yes?

Nick is out and Rhonda is in.

Our first guest here on Cmd+Edit is filling in for an absent Nick, as his schedule opened wide and swallowed him up this month.

Rhonda Thain is a freelance editor based in Toronto working at Scott Brothers Entertainment. She works with broadcast and digital format shows and dabbles with some sizzle reels for some good measure.

She talks about the benefit of working as a freelancer today, knowing when to switch to a different NLE, and offers a view into what her day-to-day work is like as an editor in Toronto.

In this episode we look at Mad Max: Fury Road and talk about the editing style used in this action-packed film.

Josh and I are the last two people in the world to watch Fury Road. It's been hailed as the "perfect action film" and has effectively hit the refresh button on the Hollywood action blockbuster. Featuring more actual stunts than CGI and a style reminiscent of the 70's road chase, exploitation films, Fury Road is a great example of an action-driven story told very well.

Listen on to hear us break down what made George Miller's action hit so successful as a story, what we thought of the editing style used and what lessons we can take away from it.

WARNING: SPOILERS BE AHEAD

What editing tricks did you notice used in the film? Let us know on twitter @CommandEdit.

Every editor nowadays appears to be expected to have a basic understanding of After Effects. It is the new Photoshop, in that clients assume that you are able to use AE to achieve certain effects for their videos, whether it be removing logos, adding motion graphics or more advanced compositing.

In this episode we cover some ways that After Effects should be a part of your everyday workflow.

  • Do you currently use AE for your workflow? Here are some suggestions for how it can be a big part of your toolkit.
  • Should you use After Effects or Nuke or Fusion? There are differences between layer-based and node-based compositing programs.
  • Creative ways to polish your shots in After Effects.
  • Are your clients expecting you to know some of these compositing tools when they hire you?
  • Where can you get better training on After Effects to get you started?

Also, we are looking for some ideas for what the first pieces of Cmd+Edit merch could be. Rather than do the basic t-shirt or coffee mug, we want to do put our logo on something that's going to be especially unique and useful for you. It can be something for your desk, for your kitchen or even for your pet (thinking outside of the box here!). If you have any ideas for merch items that you'd like us to offer a limited run of, tweet them to @CommandEdit.

Did you see the ultra-cool video that mashes together about 20 different characters from popular movies and composite them all into the same nightclub? Serpico, Terminator, Blade, Pinhead, Obi-Wan Kenobi and many others appear in Hell's Club. It's an exercise in creative compositing and editing. Check it out. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QajyNRnyPMs)

And we chose to close out this episode with an Ed Sheeran track. Why? Because we could. Enjoy!

Welcome to our first AKS Episode! (All Kinds of Shit)

Okay, so it's an acronym we just cooked up. But it's hard work coming up with a big theme for each episode every week! So for this episode Josh and I address a bunch of smaller topics and answer interesting questions that have come up.

Topics that we chat about:

• What the hell is Canadian Thanksgiving all about?

• Which of our lucky listeners gets to meet with a Cmd+Edit host?

• A brief recap of Adobe MAX 2015 and the new (not-so)exciting updates for Adobe. Some were neat, most I didn't care for. What did you think?

• By the way...DO NOT UPGRADE TO EL CAPITAN YET!

• Nick's Gear of the Week wishlist now includes a backlit Adobe Premiere keyboard from EditorsKeys. Once they make one for Mac, that is. (https://www.editorskeys.com/products/video-editing-keyboards/)

• Josh's Gear of the Week is his shiny, new teleprompter.

• What happens when your boss does not appreciate you doing exercise at work?

• Plus updates on Nick's current project (horror feature The Haunting of Kirby Road is almost locked) and Josh's announcement for EditVideoFaster.com

This episode is all about some handy tips to keep in mind when you're about to tackle a large edit. This could be a horror feature, a documentary, or a series of commercial videos. The decisions you make in setting up your project will stay with you straight to the finish line, so you'd better make sure you're setting yourself properly.

These tips could help you optimize your workflow, keep your client happy and keep you from losing hair and sleep due to overwhelming frustrations.

Nick draws from his recent experience editing his latest feature film "Kirby Road" and Josh draws on a massive series of videos (197!) he finished for his work.

We go down the list of 5 of the most common editing techniques and when they should be used in your project.

Cutting on action, crossing the axis (breaking the 180-degree rule), reveal shots, jump cuts and cross-cutting are used in cinema all of the time. So much so that you probably have never noticed them when they are used most effectively. However they stand out like a sore thumb when misused.

Using popular examples in movies that you probably have seen before (if not, you should obviously rush out and see them after listening to this), Josh and Nick discuss how you can use these techniques to tell a story better. Think of this as the first episode of Film Editing 101.

What other techniques do you enjoy seeing on the big screen? Or using in your own timelines? Let us know by emailing CommandEditPodcast@Gmail.com

Up at the break of dawn to record our episode! That's how much we love doing this.

If you use Instagram for your social media marketing, then you might be delighted to hear that Hootsuite added the ability to post directly to Instagram...sort of. It's not as simple as it sounds unfortunately but it is a step in the right direction for sharing images and videos on post production. By the way, you can follow Nick on Instagram at @Merc_Media to see more pics of his #FitnessInPost lifestyle and stills/clips from the timelines he works on. Slating your timelines is considered by many to be a forgotten technique, something that the dinosaurs of post-production used but is all but obsolete today. But not us two! Josh published an enlightening post about how to create solid slates for your timelines and how it can help you in the future. You can read it over on his blog EditVideoFaster (http://www.editvideofaster.com/slating-videos-in-your-nle/).
